Sophomore Giano Zuccaro hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 8th inning as the Berea-Midpark baseball team won, 1-0, over Avon in a pitcher’s duel Wednesday afternoon at Volunteer Park. With the win, the Titans improve to 12-7 overall, 11-6 in the SWC.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Titans started the late-inning charge when Grant Smith doubled to left center on an 0-2 count to open the inning. After a wild pitch advanced the BMHS first baseman to third, Jordan Cupach took ball four on a 3-2 count to put two runners aboard. Avon opted to then intentionally walk Alex Stegman. Avon’s Sanjay Nanda would strike out Beau Bachie to get the opening out in the eighth.
The scene was then set for the Buckeye sophomore, who came into the game hitting .286. On a 2-1 pitch, Zuccaro pulled the pitch to the right side off Nanda for the walk-off RBI single. It marked the second walk-off win in three weeks for the Orange and Blue.
Right-handed starting pitcher Kade Swisher threw seven strong innings and allowed no runs, five hits with nine strikeouts and one walk in a no decision performance. Right-handed reliever Alex Smearman replaced Swisher on the mound in the top of the eighth. Smearman was the winning pitcher of record after his one inning of work with two walks and one strikeout.
The Titans will host Normandy Thursday May 9th during senior day. First pitch from Volunteer Park is scheduled for 4:30 pm
