Boys Varsity Wrestling · Heil Finishes Seventh at State Wrestling Tournament


Shane Heil finished seventh overall in the 120 pound weight class at the OHSAA Individual Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.  The finish and achieving a spot on the podium is a first for the Titans wrestling program.

Heil opened the tournament in the championship preliminaries with a close 5-4 decision loss to Elyria’s Nate Burnett.  In the opening round of consolations, he worked to a 6-1 decision over Damien Ryan from Centerville.  Consolation round two found Heil competing against Kyren Butler from Copley with a spot on the podium on the line.  The sophomore scrapped and battled to a 3-2 decision victory.  Heil would fall in the consolation quarterfinals 8-2 to Upper Arlington’s Mitch Herren, finishing seventh overall at the 120 pound weight class.  Heil finished the year with a record of 46-13

Junior Pino Dipierro finished 1-2 on the weekend.  After dropping a tough championship preliminary match to Dublin Coffman’s James Baumann 5-4, he rebounded with a second period pin of John Adams’ Jerome Scott in the opening round of consolations.  Dipierro’s weekend ended with a 3-1 decision loss to Saint Edwards’ Richard Delsanter in the second round of consolations.  Dipierro finished the season with a record of 41-7.

Caden Wendling made his first trip to Columbus to participate in the OHSAA Tournament.  In his opening match, the junior battled and lost to Lucas Uliano from Powell Olentangy Liberty 1-0.  Wendling fell in his opening round consolation match to Vandalia Butler’s Logan Hoskins 5-0.  He finished the season with a record of 42-11.
