Boys Varsity Track, Girls Varsity Track · Seven Titans Win Titles; Boys and Girls Track and Field Each Finish Third at SWC

Final SWC Results
Both the boys and girls track and field teams had impressive showings at the Southwestern Conference Championship Meet on Wednesday and Friday at Amherst Steele High School.  Each team finished third overall in the conference, the girls scoring 87.5 team points, and the boys scoring 85.5 team points.  Avon was crowned the champion for the girls with 177 team points, while Amherst won the boys title with 114 team points.

Between the two teams, Berea-Midpark won four events, and had several finishers in the top three.  The Titans have had strong hurdlers all spring, and it showed again on Friday afternoon.  Sophomore Shura Ermakov not only won the 300 meter hurdles, she broke a Berea-Midpark school record with her time of 44.12 seconds, smashing the previous record of 46.88 by nearly three seconds!  Ian Daugherty recorded a third place finish in the same event with his time of 40.49.

Six relay teams finished in the top three of their respected events on Friday, highlighted by the boys 4×400 meter relay team of Daugherty, Anthoney Miller, Adam Kamel and Ben Howard.  The team finished first in the event with their time of 3:28.29.  Ryan Rivera, Jaylen Bannister, Miller and David Browning, members of the 4×100 relay team, posted a time of 44.25 good enough for second place, only a half second shy of Westlake.  The 4×200 relay team (Daugherty, Browning, Kyle Rhoades and Miller) as well as the 4×800 relay team (Howard, Brandon Garibotti, Ty Treiber and Kamel) both finished in third place.

The girls had two relay teams shine on the track.  The 4×400 relay team and the 4×800 relay team both finished in second place, each losing to Avon by less than a second.  The team of Rachel Buxton, Brooke Kosakowski, Ermakov and Jankowski recorded a time of 4:09.63 in the 4×400 relay race.  In the 4×800, Jankowski, Megan Thai, Kenzie Howard and Ermakov finished the race in 9:35.12.

Jankowski continued her trend of scoring major team points for the girls in the distance events.  Her time of 11:45.42 in the 3200 meter run won the event by a solid two seconds.  Jankowski nearly pulled off another victory in the 1600 meter run (5:18.73), finishing in second to Alicia Del Valle of Amherst by three tenths of a second.

In the field events, the Titans had a particularly strong showing in the high jump.  Junior Mia Vargo won the event for the girls with her season best jump of 5 feet 4 inches.  ShaDaryll Clark finished second for Berea-Midpark, Adrian Levesque third, after both cleared 5 feet 10 inches.

Jayley Dodd finished third overall in the long jump after posting a leap of 16 feet 5 and 3/4 inches.  Kayla Reece’s discus throw of 104 feet and 6 inches was good enough for a third place finish.
